Sold car after agreeing to view

I discussed with him over the phone and we agreed that I would view the next day, as I would start work earlier and finish earlier. He agreed that this would be fine. I left work at 2pm in order to be there for the agreed time of 3pm and I noticed a message on my phone after pulling at a service station saying 'sorry car now sold'. I travelled about 20 miles for nothing, as he emailed me after 2pm. I don't get why someone would do this, knowing that someone had agreed to come down and view.
