Price Jump?

Called Old Welwyn Motor Company as interested in a VW golf for my son priced at £2950, discussed with the salesman if price was negotiable, he stated he would not discuss over the phone but would be open to offers once I was there in person so agreed to make the trip up view the car. Before leaving I went back on line to get the address only to find the price the car was advertised for had been raised by £500 now was being advertised for £3450. I called the garage to ask why this had been done and was told that because there had some interest in the car they had increased the price.... Can they do this, is this bad practice legal ?? Looking at other reviews it appears this wasn't the first case of this. obviously didn't make the trip as had totally lost trust by this type of dodgy business tactics.
