Sold a car with fault and refusing to re

I purchased a car from Carl and had a fault/incident occur on my journey immediately after picking up. Notified him that evening and fault occured next day and on most subsequent journeys. Semiauto gearbox issues have made driving the car unsafe with quite a few near miss accidents. He has had the car back a number of times explaining it was battery issues and then sensor issues however the gearbox definitely grated loudly when it refused to go into gear at all on one occasion. Whilst owning the car for 8 weeks or so I spent £200/month on taxis as it has not started when I tried to start my journey or has been with Carl 'being fixed'. He now has car returned with logbook updated as him being new owner (online) and still he is refusing to give any refund or actually acknowledge the severity of the gear issue. The semiauto gearbox would jump into Neutral while driving without my touching gearstick and I would have to coast to side of road and turn off engine. It would take 5-10mins to restart car and have gearbox allow a gear other than N to be selected. Avoid totally. He has the salesman patter and appears helpful and genuine but I would not trust him again.
